Aim: Measurements of Cyclosporine A (CyA)* whole blood Trough Levels in diabetic and non-diabetic Indian renal transplant patients. Introduction: Diabetic recipients of kidney transplant often have poor and van-able absorption of CyA. Also drug interactions of CyA with antihyperglycemic drugs may exist. In view of this a retrospective analysis was done to compare whole blood CyA Trough Levels in diabetic and non diabetic Indian renal transplant patients. Materials & Methods: One hundred and three renal transplant patients {36 diabetics (mean age 48.9±7.3years) and 67 non-diabetics (mean age 37.1±10.4years)} who were receiving CyA were evaluated 1 year post transplant. Whole blood CyA levels were assayed by a validated HPLC method. Normal graft function was assessed by kidney function tests. Observations and Results: The mean dose and whole blood CyA Trough Levels in both groups of patients were statistically similar (p>0.05) using Wilcoxon sign rank test (Table). Over 90% graft and patient survival in both groups was observed during one year followup. |

Conclusion: CyA Trough Levels in diabetic and non diabetic renal transplant patients were in the normal therapeutic range. Apparently no significant difference was seed in Trough Levels in diabetic patients. Patient survival rate of 90% depicts good idea of the impacts of overall success of renal transplant patint stabilization. |
