Health care organization worldwide are focussing attention on the efficient and effective use or resources with particular attention to value for money and maximizing health gain per unit of expenditure. In this context the cost of immunosuppression drugs is an important contributor to the direct health care cost of transplantation. Cyclosporine (CyA) is mainly responsible for the prohibitive cost of triple drug regimen. Because of the limited economic resources available for health care in our patients, it is important to evaluate the average cost of CyA therapy in post renal transplant period, as economic factors play an important part in non-compliance, thus leading to graft loss. The present study was designed to evaluate the average cost of CyA in different post renal transplant periods. We evaluated 146 patients on CyA* (Solution and Capsules) from time of renal transplant till current status. The average dose and monthly cost of CyA are shown in the table.

Period in (month) Dose in (mg/kg) Level in (ng/ml) Monthly CyA Cost (Rs)
1 413.41+126.16 226.74+141.72 11904
2 375.75+ 102.83 306.70+ 149.34 10821
3 324.41 +89.28 282.68 + 184.58 9342
4-6 286.03 ± 99.50 277.66 ± 145.05 8235
7-12 225.99±70.50 196.99 ± 152.77 6508
>12 201.37±63.65 166.92±89.88 5799

Our study has shown that on average for the maintenance of kidney graft Rs. 5799/- per month are needed for CyA in most of the patients after 12 Month of renal transplant. We conclude the cost of CyA decreases from Rs. 11904 per month immediately after transplant to Rs. 5799 per month after 80 weeks of renal transplant.

* CyA used is Panimum Bioral from Panacea Biotec.
